Change DNS settings (PC, Xbox, PlayStation)

Sometimes, connectivity problems in games can be caused by issues with your current DNS server. Switching to a different DNS server can help bypass any problems with your ISP's default DNS or resolve issues related to DNS lookup failures.

How to change DNS on a PC

  1. Go to the Control Panel.
  2. Click Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.
  3. Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. For example:
    ◦ To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, right-click the Ethernet interface and select Properties.
    ◦ To change the settings for a wireless connection, right-click the Wi-Fi interface and select Properties.
    If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  4. Select the Networking tab. Under This connection, use the following items: select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then click Properties.
  5. Click Advanced and select the DNS tab. If any DNS server IP addresses are listed there, write them down for future reference and remove them from this window.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Select Use the following DNS server addresses. If any IP addresses are listed in the Preferred or Alternate DNS server, write them down for future reference.
  8. Enter the details for your preferred DNS server, such as Google's DNS: 8.8.8.8 for primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 for secondary DNS.
    ◦ If Google DNS doesn't work, you can also try using another free DNS operator. For example, Cloudflare DNS (Cloudflare’s public DNS addresses are 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1)

How to change DNS on Xbox

  1. Turn on your Xbox Series and go to the home screen.
  2. Select 'Settings' (gear icon) from the main menu.
  3. Scroll down and select 'Network' from the settings menu.
  4. Select 'Network settings' and select 'Advanced settings'.
  5. Select 'DNS settings' and select 'Manual'.
  6. Enter the details for your preferred DNS server, such as Google's DNS: 8.8.8.8 for primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 for secondary DNS.
    ◦ If Google DNS doesn't work, you can also try using another free DNS operator. For example, Cloudflare DNS (Cloudflare’s public DNS addresses are 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1)
  7. Save your settings and exit the menu.
  8. Restart the console and check if the issue persists.

How to change DNS on PlayStation 4

  1. In the PS4 home screen, go to “Settings” and select “Network.”
  2. Choose “Set up internet connection.”
  3. Select your internet connection type and pick your connection from the list.
  4. When prompted to choose how you want to set up your internet connection, select “Custom.”
  5. Select “Automatic” for “IP address settings.”
  6. Select “Do not specify” for “DHCP host name.”
  7. In the “DNS settings” screen, select “Manual.”
  8. Enter the details for your preferred DNS server, such as Google's DNS: 8.8.8.8 for primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 for secondary DNS.
    ◦ If Google DNS doesn't work, you can also try using another free DNS operator. For example, Cloudflare DNS (Cloudflare’s public DNS addresses are 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1)
  9. Choose “Automatic” in the “MTU settings” screen.
  10. Select “Do not use” for “Proxy server.”
  11. Test the connection. 

How to change DNS on PlayStation 5

  1. In the PS5 home screen, go to “Settings” and select “Network.”
  2. Select “Settings” and choose “Set up internet connection.”
  3. In the “Advanced settings” screen, set the “DNS settings” to “Manual.”
  4. Enter the details for your preferred DNS server, such as Google's DNS: 8.8.8.8 for primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 for secondary DNS.
    ◦ If Google DNS doesn't work, you can also try using another free DNS operator. For example, Cloudflare DNS (Cloudflare’s public DNS addresses are 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1)
  5. Select “Ok” in the lower-left corner of the screen to confirm the changes.
  6. Wait for the PS5 to test the connection. You’re done!
