Insurgency Crashes

If you find that Insurgency is crashing during game launches and/or gameplay, please run through the following checklist of known troubleshooting solutions.

 

Verify the Integrity of Game Files

  • Restart your computer and launch Steam.
  • Next, you can either right-click the game in your Library or click the gear icon from the game's Library page on the far right.
  • From the drop-down menu, select Properties.
  • Select the Installed Files tab and click the Verify Integrity of Game Files button.

Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes

 

Windows Update

Before you proceed to the next step, ensure that your Windows System is up to date, and have all updates necessary for installing Visual C++ Redistributable packages. 

 

Pre-Requisites

If you have recently upgraded Windows from a previous version or have recently reinstalled Windows then you may not have the necessary files installed in order to run the game. Please ensure the following are installed (both x86 and x64 versions are needed):

In case you have trouble installing these, uninstall previously installed versions of the same type/year, restart your PC, and then install it back again using files from the links above.

If it still can't be installed, repair or reinstall your operating system, as it is most likely damaged. Also, ensure that you are running the latest version of the drivers available for your graphics card. 

 

Anti-Virus Software

Check your anti-virus software to make sure that the game is not being blocked by your anti-virus software. It may be necessary to add an exception for the directory where the game is installed.

 

Incompatible Software

Some software that injects an overlay over the game such as Mumble, MSI Afterburner, Overflow, or Raptr could contribute to game instability. It is recommended to disable these overlays if the game is crashing at random times during gameplay.

You can also try disabling the Steam overlay for Insurgency specifically by right-clicking "Insurgency" in your Steam Library, going to Properties, and then unchecking "Enable the Steam Overlay While In-Game".

 

Configuring Graphics 

On low-end hardware and laptops, you may find it necessary to lower your graphics settings. You can do this in-game by going to Options > Video Options > Advanced Video and turning down the settings on that page.

  • Model/texture and shader detail will have the largest impact on memory usage.

If you are running the game on a laptop that has hybrid graphics (integrated graphics + discreet graphics card), then make sure the game is using discreet graphics by viewing the power-saving options in the NVIDIA/AMD control panel.

 

Modifications

As the game develops, certain modifications, such as re-textures and model replacements, can become obsolete or broken. If you have any crashing/freezing issues, first remove ALL your custom modifications from the game and test the vanilla game.

 

Custom Config Files

Many new players use autoexec config files to alter how the game runs or looks. These configs are mostly copy-pasted from a different game or are old enough to become broken. Remove any such config file and custom startup (command line) parameters to prevent issues caused by these. 

 

Black Screen

Ensure your main monitor screen refresh rate is set to a PC-compatible one (60Hz instead of 59Hz as our games do not support TV-compatible fullscreen refresh rates).

These settings can be found within drivers for your graphics card or under Display Settings in your operating system.

You might also want to play in Windowed or Borderless video mode instead of Fullscreen for faster alt-tabbing in and out of the game. This option can be found under the in-game Video Settings menu.

 

Texture Glitches

In case you see black/white/grey polygons (triangles) or stripes/lines all over your screen, it might be caused by a couple of things listed below:

  • Outdated or improperly working driver for your graphics card (reinstall/update driver).
  • Damaged/dying hardware (typically graphics cards and hard drives).
  • Overheating of your hardware components (stress-test your PC via tools like Furmark/Prime95).
  • Third-party application hooking/loading into the game (disable/uninstall overlay applications).
